Learning a musical instrument with Harrow Music Service

Music is a wonderful skill for any child to learn, it can give skills that can enhance a child's life for many years.
Research has shown that learning a musical instrument can:
  • Improve reasoning capacity and problem solving skills
  • Improve concentration and self expression
  • Improve maths and language performance
  • Improve memory and reasoning capacity, time management skills and eloquence
  • Can enhance social and team skills

The learning process can be very fulfilling, but it is important that children choose to play the correct instrument. Music is all around us, but very rarely do we actually listen to it properly. It is important for children to be aware of what each instrument sounds like, looks like and what skills are required to play each instrument.

HMS ensembles regularly performs concerts and workshops in Harrow Schools, these provide an ideal opportunity for pupils to hear and learn about individual instruments, teachers will also often do demonstration sessions in assemblies in order to promote their instruments.

Once a child has decided which instrument they would like to learn, parents should approach the school to see if tuition on that instrument is offered. If the teacher has spaces, they will meet with the child to assess the child's suitablility for the particular instrument. Each different instrument has different physical requirements and some variation in the musical skills required.

If your child is accepted for lessons the school will inform you of any costs involved and may even issue you with a contract, (each school charges their own individual rate for lessons). If the teacher has no space then the child will be placed on a waiting list. If for some reason the teacher does not feel that the child is suitable for that particular instrument, they may be able to give guidance as to what instrument would be more suitable.

All lessons last for 30 minutes and are in groups (up to a maximum of 4 pupils, with the exception of recorders and steel pans) and are given by highly qualified and experienced specialist teachers. Each pupil receives 33 lessons a year that are spread across the 3 terms.

Most instruments can either be hired or bought through HMS. For more details click here
