“Harrow Music Service is a good, responsive music service, with some very good features, notably opportunities for the world and popular music " - Ofsted

At HMS we have always been keen to reflect the cultural diversity of our community. Apart from wanting to ensure that we are able to offer appropriate provision to pupils, the enrichment and excitement which are derived from engaging with music from a mulitiplicity of cultures ensures that our work is vibrant, imaginative and inspiring.

Recent work has focused on Indian music. Although Indian music has been taught in schools for many years, we have invested in a large number of sitars, tablas and harmoniums and through a pilot project in a range of schools, the take-up of these instruments has tripled.

We are proud of our long and successful steel-pan tradition which goes from strength to strength. Specialists in samba and other South American genres have joined the team during the past few years and their contribution has further enlivened our work.

Current developments include provision for popular Indian music as well as a greater exploration of ways in which world music and dance can be combined and developed.

Our World Music Festival, in which we celebrate not only the cultural diversity within our schools, but also the wealth of talent which our young people possess, has become a firm fixture in our concert calendar.

If there is are any musical genre which you would like us to add to our list or if you could offer us expertise, please contact us via this website or at the HMS office.
